VILLAGE BOARD MEETING MINUTES - AUGUST 21, 2006

Mayor Skeet and Trustees Patterson, Peterson, Sobczak and Russ convened in front of Mayor Skeet’s House at 12 Maple Avenue at 6:50 pm to start a fact-finding walk. Resident Al Graham also joined the walk for the first 15 minutes. Resident Mr. Plowe also joined for five minutes.
  • Observations were made of drains on Maple Avenue and Murray’s side yard at 22 Maple Avenue.
  • The drain on Water Street was looked at and vegetation to be cleaned out.
  • The underpass was observed and the deteriorating concrete issues. Need to contact DOT regarding this.
  • Walked over to drain gate up near Depot Street. When Trustee Russ leaned on it, it fell over. It was decided to get quotes to have this fixed immediately.
  • All commented how nice the Village signs were and it was suggested that maybe the art or tech classes at the high school could maintain these as a project.
  • Walk ended at the Landmark Hotel for Family Days meeting at 7:55 pm. Joining the Mayor and Trustees were Pat Newton, Al Starkweather, Tom Patterson, Amy Skeet and Scott Lang.
  • Mayor thanked those who worked on the Family Day. It was estimated there were 350 – 400 people in attendance throughout most of the day. It was felt many left early due to the weather turning cold.
  • A few suggestions were given such as for the entertainment possible two stages would avoid delay between music groups. Also a better sound system for the singers and speakers should be looked into for next year. It was also mentioned not to allow any bicycles in festival area after the children’s parade.
  • It was felt that it was good to see more of the older generation in attendance this year with the Crossroads of Harmony and Shriners band as a draw. John Lamond’s band was good, but weather deterred people from staying for them. Tom Patterson made the suggestion to perhaps begin and end about an hour earlier, especially for people with small children, to build on the Family oriented theme.
  • Al Starkweather mentioned the Kiwanis 2007 Calendar is focusing on the 200th year of Corfu (Longs Corners) and an idea would be to print up a Corfu Enterprise newspaper for the event next year.
  • Mayor Skeet mentioned that next year the Fire Department would like to possibly participate and do something on a larger scale to celebrate their 125th anniversary, such as a firemen’s parade. Mayor Skeet suggested we honor the Fire Department next year and mentioned there was a request in the pending DWI grant for $500.00 towards education, which could possibly be utilized towards fire safety education at the Family Day event.
  • One other idea brought up was a team that is trained to demonstrate disasters and do reenactments of accidents. It was mentioned how well received the landing of Mercy Flight was. Mayor Skeet said that Laurie Brady reported that the Mercy Flight table did well.
  • It was stressed to make sure that all paperwork going out to participants specify that we are trying not to duplicate any food products or vended products.
  • Some possible ideas suggested for next year were: Irish dancers, Pie-baking contest, dunk tank, karaoke, watermelon eating contest, “Corfu Idol” contest. It was also mentioned that next year the port-a-potties need to be in a much better lit location.
  • The idea of establishing a non-profit organization as a committee was brought up. Some of the advantages and disadvantages of this were discussed.
  • It was brought up to possibly change the venue for the later hour to be more teen oriented ie) DJ vs live band.
  • Mayor Skeet brought up the idea of wanting to possibly establish something on a smaller scale for the winter such as Christmas Caroling. Brief discussion was held regarding this idea.
  • Motion was made by Trustee Patterson and seconded by Trustee Peterson to adjourn meeting. Motion carried
